Chapter Sixteen

“You’re supposed to be turning in a preliminary idea for review today,” Mister Franklin reprimanded. I shuffled my feet and looked at the floor while Alistar looked like he could care less. “Nothing to say?” Franklin’s eyes flicked between us before he sighed.

“Sorry, sir,” I mumbled, swiping my hair behind my ear and out of my face.

“Unacceptable. You two promised me no issues. Everyone else turned in their ideas today.” We stayed silent. What were we supposed to say? We’d had plenty of time to scramble something together and instead we ignored each other and then argued.

“I’m giving you detention.” My head snapped up.

“Detention!” I never got detention. He waved his hand in his face.

“Not a normal detention. Consider it a team building exercise.” Oh, fun! I rolled my eyes and the teacher ignored me. I shot Alistar a look and noticed his jaw tick. He was pissed. “I want you to take these supplies down to the storage building outside. Put everything back where it belongs.“ He waved at a couple crates of various school supplies.

“Now?” I asked disbelievingly.

“Yes. Finish up before your next class. Tomorrow after classes I want your project idea in my office.” I grumbled as we collected the crates and left. The rest of the class watched us go with snickers.

Alistar and I remained silent and ignored each other as we made our way to the storage building. The door was perched open and I went in and began placing the supplies back in their spots. Rulers in the rulers box, and stuff like that.

“This is your fault,” I grumbled to Alistar.

“Mine?” He deadpanned.

“Yes, Alistar.” I sneered his name. “We would have gotten this assignment done last night if you didn’t want to constantly start shit with me.” Alistar threw whatever he had back in his crate then nudged the crate into a corner with his foot. I rolled my eyes and continued putting my stuff away.

“I didn’t start anything. You were late. Then when I went to find you you were flirting and blushing with that guy. It seemed like you’d forgotten yourself.”

“Oh, please. The guy is just confused and I don’t like him, like I already said. You just decided it was the perfect time to tease me.” I looked at the crate still filled with a bunch of random crap and gave up. I pushed it under a shelf and dusted my hands. I felt Alistar at my back suddenly.

“I wasn’t teasing you.” I flipped around in surprise and cursed. He was too close.

“Back off.”

“I wasn’t teasing you, Matt. You were going to cause yourself more trouble by entertaining the idea of that guy.” I rolled my eyes then I pushed past Alistar and headed for the door. When I grabbed it, it didn’t budge.

“Uh…” Alistar came up and tugged on the door too. Still didn’t open.

“Are we locked in here?” I asked in disbelief. Our heads flipped to each other. I looked at his apathetic face and groaned. “Perfect. Just perfect.
